Next week sees the long awaited UK launch of Estee Lauder's new Advanced Night Repair Eye Synchronised Complex, which contains the same cutting-edge technology as the original Night Repair and is already a huge hit in America. But does it live up to expectations? We tested the top selling products, including the Estee Lauder eye serum, ranging in price from an eye-watering £180 to the best bargain buy at £3.49.

Fresh look: The launch of Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair Eye Synchronised Complex is being highly anticipated, but which eye potions come out top?

Clinique All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage, £20 (Clinique counters nationwide)

This boasts a medical-grade stainless steel rollerball that delivers a liquid gel-serum to help massage and refresh puffy eyes and reduce the appearance of dark circles. Our tester claims this is the best product she has ever used on her undereye bags. Following advice from a Clinique consultant, she kept it in then fridge for extra cooling power and also saw a visible reduction in puffiness.

Gatineau Aquamemory Roll-On, £30 (01753 827 619)

This rollerball can also be popped in the fridge, and it's a great wake-up call. The cream itself is lightweight and absorbs quickly, so it doesn't stick to foundation like some creams do. It's so easy to use and hygienic, as the serum never touches your fingers. One of the best around.

Formula Vitamin C Eye Cream, £5 (Marks & Spencer)

While this cream didn't instantly reduce under-eye shadows, it did smooth out the skin and make the eyes appear brighter and more awake. Works over time, to help make the eye area appear more youthful — but don't rely on it for an instant pick-me-up.

Neal's Yard White Tea Toning Eye Gel, £22 (lookfantastic.com)

The applicator put us off this product - one squirt and it disperses enough gel for at least two days. Our tester used too much and it made her eyes even puffier. The directions aren't clear either, advising a ‘small amount'. It's a pity, as this is a quick-drying, light gel that was refreshing to use - we didn't see much evidence of it correcting dark circles, though.

Neal's Yard White Tea Toning Eye Gel, £22

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Synchronized Complex, £35 (esteelauder.co.uk)

The newest eye treatment from Estee Lauder is a treat. It feels like putting on air, it's so light, and our tester did look less lined around the eyes after using it for only one week. It doesn't give instant results, but over time, this works the same magic as the face complex in the same range.

Anne Sémonin Eye Express Radiance Ice Cubes, £40 (Liberty, London)

Formulated with marine spring water, rich in trace elements and mineral salts, these are designed to be stored in the freezer. This is the perfect pick-me up for tired, puffy eyes and, once you've got over the shock of applying ice cubes to delicate skin, they are strangely relaxing — which is down to Tephrosia Pururea, a plant extract that stimulates the release of feel-good endorphins.

Elemis Absolute Eye Serum, £26 (timetospa.co.uk)

Serum that comes with a dropper, which is a brilliant device for eye treatments. You know exactly how much to use, and it's much more hygienic than sticking your fingers into a pot of cream. This is cooling and makes skin appear softer. Fine lines were reduced after a just a few days.

Wei Tibetan Chrysanthemum Eye Treatment Pads, £44 (spacenk.co.uk)

These chrysanthemum-infused pads are fun to use. Tear open the sachet and pop one on each eye, leaving them on for ten minutes, then remove to feel wide awake. They're not cheap — there are ten packs of two pads — so are for special occasions. They helped reduce itchiness and puffiness, and were great for easing redness.

Nubo Cell Dynamic Eye Focus, £180 (nubobeauty.com)

We expected miracles due to the price. And it is absolutely luxurious. It promises to work on the causes of shadows, puffiness and wrinkles, as well as help reduce them. It's great for dehydrated skin, and gives the instant ‘lift' it promises. It tightens skin around the eye, and works long-term on crow's feet.

Origins No Puffery, £19 (origins.co.uk)

Provides a perfect excuse to relax for ten minutes. Use it as an under-eye mask by leaving it on and then removing with a tissue — great before an evening out, or use sparingly as an everyday treatment. We enjoyed using it as a mask because it has a cooling effect, and eyes definitely seem brighter and less puffy afterwards.

Ole Henriksen Truth Is In The Eyes, £55 (Selfridges)

Sounds a bit brutal, as it's an eye peel, but it's much more gentle than it seems. Applied morning and evening, it works to illuminate dark areas and improve elasticity. It creates a ‘tight' feeling that makes it feel as though it's working, and our tester noticed a big difference after a week.

Sisley Eye Contour Mask, £68( 020 7591 6380)

If you're looking for an instant fix, this is it. Smooth on around the eye area and lids and leave for ten minutes, and you'll notice a marked difference in dark shadows and puffiness. It also seems to plump fine lines and makes you look well rested. Save it for special evenings out, when you really want to glow.

L'Oreal Collagen Micro Vibration Eye, £16.99 (Boots)

A strange concept here — an eye treatment that vibrates. Well,we have vibrating mascaras, so why not? We're not sure the vibration — which claims to help massage the skin to release trapped fluids - makes much difference, but the treatment itself is cooling and soothing and very easy to apply.

Crystal Clear Roll Away the Years Eye Serum, £38 (Selfridges)

We loved this. It has a unique rollerball application, with three metal balls which are instantly cooling on the skin. It dries rapidly and has a tightening effect under the eyes. It also comes in a handbag-sized bottle, so it can be used to brighten and tighten throughout the day.

Dirty Works Leave The Bag Behind Eye Mask, £3.49 (Sainsbury's)

This is well-priced, as it can be used warm or cold, and really seems to work. Used cold (place the mask in the freezer for 15 minutes), it reduced swelling and puffiness, and is perfect for hayfever sufferers. Used warm, it's equally as effective, and helps to relieve tension. Place in a bowl of hot water for 15 minutes and apply to eyelids for 5-10 minutes.

Derma Intensive+ Eye Revival Roll On, £5.40 (Tesco)

A rollerball treatment that doesn't look much, but is pleasant to use. There's no mess, no residue and it goes on exactly where you want it. Also, with a rollerball, there's less danger of over-applying, which can cause irritation. We didn't see much evidence of eyes being ‘revived', although it did give skin a little zing.

Dirty Works Leave the Bags Behind Eye Mask, £3.49

L'Oreal Collagen Micro Vibration, £16.99

Derma Intensive+ Eye Revival Roll On, £5.40

Benefit Depuffing Eye Gel, £20.50 (benefitcosmetics.co.uk)

Promsies to ‘tone and revitalise' the eye area, but unfortunately we saw little evidence of that. The tube means it's easy to apply too much, which leaves a sticky residue. Pleasant, and fairly cooling, but didn't do much for our tired, puffy eyes.

Clarins Eye Revive Beauty Flash, £25 (clarins.com)

Clever product, it works just like the original Beauty Flash for the face, giving skin an instant boost, and making the complexion feel energised and brighter. Our tester found it slightly addictive. This is an instant treatment, and not one that will necessary give long-term benefits, but it really does work if you want to look like you've had a good night's sleep.

Simple Kind To Eyes Revitalising Roll On, £4.99 (Boots)

This rollerball treatment is infused with soothing cucumber, and is great for those with sensitive skins. It reduces puffiness effectively, and makes the eye area feel rejuventated. It's good for a quick fix to make you feel awake, but its biggest selling point is definitely its suitability for sensitive skins.

From cold teabags to frozen peas, the best DIY treatments

Bright eyes: Cucumber slices, teaspoons, frozen peas... The easy way to fresher looking eyes

How to get rid of puffy eyes and dark circles.

Keep a couple of teaspoons in the fridge, place them over your eyes for ten minutes for instant results.

Drain sinuses, which can cause puffy eyes, while still lying down flat in the morning. With some face oil, start at the sides of the nose and run your ring fingers across and out over the face towards the jaw hinge. Repeat several times.

Try a couple of cold chamomile tea bags, or cottonwool balls soaked in iced tea placed on your eyes for up to ten minutes.

Make sure your head is elevated when you go to bed - you will be amazed at the difference this makes to puffy eyes.

Not only are they cooling, but the smell is known to have soothing and calming properties. Use straight from the fridge.

A bag of frozen peas on your forehead and eyes is a great pick-me-up and also a good hangover cure — keep it on as long as you can stand it.

Concealer is the only way to instantly hide dark circles. Don't choose one that's too light. If your shadows have a blue tinge, opt for a yellow toned concealer. If they don't, choose one that's peachy.
